All three keep secrets from each other because of misunderstandings and self-loathing/insecurities, but it isn’t gimmicky or frustrating like it is in a lot fiction.

The way the core trio interacts is my favorite part of the novel. Ben is my favorite, but only by narrow margin, since they’re all awesome. Black’s faeries are fascinating, and the way that they coexist with the humans in Fairfold makes for a unique, compelling setting… and coming from me, that’s saying a lot since I normally couldn’t care less about setting. The horned prince is equal parts romantic and terrifying the bizarre revels Hazel and Jack attend are just as threateningly bonkers as you could ask for. The faeries in The Darkest Part of the Forest are excellent. The rules, the courts, the beautifully alluring danger… when done well, stories about faeries are some of my favorites (examples: The Dark Artificesby Cassandra Clare Faeries of Dreamdark by Laini Taylor). I love fantasy when it is done well, and faeries are one of my favorite mythological creatures. The two of them, together with Ben’s best friend Jack-who is a changeling-are thrown into the middle of the faerie conflict and the mystery surrounding the newly awakened prince. However, that ended years ago now Hazel is a reckless heartbreaker and Ben refuses to play music. For years they hunted violent faeries as a pair Ben stunned them with his music while Hazel smote them.

As a baby, Ben was blessed/cursed with magical musical talent Hazel learned at a young age to kill faeries with a sword she found in the woods. Hazel and her older brother Ben are an unusual pair.

The action of the story picks up when the prince awakes and Hazel Evans awakes with mud on her feet, glass on her hands, and no memory of what happened. The most remarkable sight in Fairfold is the glass casket that holds a horned faerie prince, and has done for as long as anyone can remember. Faeries are dangerous creatures, but the people of Fairfold know the rules to keep themselves safe it’s only the tourists who get killed. The Darkest Part of the Forest takes place in Fairfold, a town in which humans live right next to faeries. I have a terrible memory, so I didn’t remember much about the book except that I really liked it. I really needed to read a book that I knew I’d like, so I decided to reread Holly Black’s The Darkest Part of the Forest, which I read a few years ago and loved. I got off to a pretty bad reading start in 2018 both books have been Cs, which doesn’t sound that bad until you realize that I have only read two C books since I started rating books by report card in November of last year.
